HAMPTON COURT PALACE’S ROLE IN TV HISTORIC DRAMA SERIES WOLF HALL
Hampton Court Palace had a key role in the filming of the latest BBC series of Wolf Hall, The Mirror and The Light which follows the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell, chief minister to Henry V111.
The historic palace was the home Henry V111 in the 15oo’s although originally built as a grand estate for Cardinal Wolsey, the King turned Hampton Court into a magnificent residence where the Royal household was based and entertained.
Adapted from the final novel in Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror and the Light follows the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell, chief minister to Henry V111.
For the show, Hampton Court Palace set the stage for Tudor court intrigue, recreating events that might have happened within its historic walls.
Filming took place in the Great Hall, the heart of the Tudor palace, reflecting the significance of this space in hosting Henry VIII’s court.
Other locations used for filming include the Great Gatehouse, Base Court, Clock Court and Master Carpenter’s Court.
Filming also took place at Wells Cathedral, Gloucester Cathedral, Berkeley Castle, Montacute House and Barrington Court in Somerset and Lacock Abbey in Witlshire.
The Mirror and the Light is based on the final book in Dame Hilary Mantel’s trilogy, The Mirror And The Light, with Mark Rylance playing the lead role of Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII is played by Damian Lewis, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as secretary Rafe Sadler and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Wolsey.
The Mirror and the Light premiered on Sunday 10 November on BBC One and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
