MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER ASSAULTS IN RICHMOND
Police were called yesterday to reports of a man behaving erratically and assaulting members of the public in Richmond.
Officers located the male in Clarence Street, who had to be restrained due to his violent behaviour, believed due to the effects of drink and drugs causing a condition called Acute Behavioural Disturbance (ABD).
The police said: “This is a life-threatening medical emergency characterised by extreme agitation, delirium, and physical violence, often with, metabolic acidosis and, in some cases, unexpected sudden death.
“It is not a formal diagnosis but an umbrella term for symptoms stemming from drugs, mental illness, or, metabolic disturbances.”
He was treated as a medical emergency and taken to West Middlesex Hospital by London Ambulance service for treatment and is now recovering.
The male remains in police custody whilst assaults on members of the public and the attending officers are investigated.
Police said: “Thanks as always to the community who called 999, allowing officers to respond quickly.”
