POLICE INVESTIGATE DOG ATTACK ON DUCK

A duck rescued after being mauled by a dog in Richmond during a live BBC Breakfast show broadcast is now recovering as police investigate the incident and locals raise funds for her treatment.

The bird, nicknamed Lupita,  suffered a broken pelvis after being attacked near Richmond, with residents stepping in to rescue her and get her urgent veterinary care.

Supporters have already raised hundreds of pounds towards her recovery, while police continue enquiries into the attack.

A spokesperson for the Met told Teddington Town: “Police were contacted on Saturday, 27 June following concerns around a dog attacking a duck in Richmond Park.

“The incident is believed to have occurred on Thursday, 25 June, where the duck was seriously injured. Enquiries are in the early stages and remain ongoing. “

The Story Behind Lupita is told on the crowdfunding page.
On Wednesday, 24 June 2026, a truly heartbreaking incident unfolded live on BBC Breakfast.
While the show was broadcasting from Richmond Riverside, a loose dog jumped from a kayak, chasing and brutally mauling a beloved local feral duck named Lupita.
The shocking footage went viral, leaving thousands of viewers deeply concerned for her survival.
Thanks to the swift actions of local heroes—including Vivi (@veevs), Mark Edwards MBE, and James (@lsupco)—Lupita was successfully pulled from the river and rushed to a specialist veterinarian.
Her Current Condition :
X-rays have revealed that Lupita is suffering from a broken pelvis and severe leg trauma. Feral ducks are incredibly sensitive, and the risk of delayed shock from such a violent attack is high.
Lupita is currently resting and recovering in a quiet, safe, and stress-free environment at the home of Ann, a dedicated independent bird rescuer.
Ann is providing around-the-clock specialized care, administering vital pain relief, monitoring her food intake, and helping her slowly rebuild her strength and trust.
Why We Need Your Help
Independent wildlife rehabilitators like Ann do incredible work completely out of their own pockets and homes.
They do not receive government funding or the large-scale donations that major charities do.Every single penny raised through this campaign will go directly toward supporting Lupita’s ongoing journey to recovery.
Your donations will fund:
Veterinary Bills: the cost of her initial emergency assessments and specialist X-rays were paid for by Vivi (@veevs) and Dani (@danipics22) with no refund needed – but Lupita will need follow-up medical check-ups and x-Rays.
Medication:
Essential pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatments to keep her comfortable while her pelvis naturally fractures mend.
Specialist Nutrition & Care Equipment:
High-quality waterfowl feed and clean rehabilitation supplies tailored to her recovery needs.
