Scores of poppy-wearing children joined the commemorations which have added poignancy given the commitment and current deployment of so many British Armed Forces all over the world.
Wreaths and crosses were laid at the base of the memorial from twenty two different organisations including, the Police, the RNLI, the Royal Navy, St. John’s Ambulance, the Salvation Army, Jamaican Wreath, the Rotary Club, the Teddington Society, the Teddington Memorial Hospital, the Turing School and Park Lane Stables, The Royal British Legion and Richmond Council by local councillor Richard Baker.
Various other local councillors also attended.
The service was conducted by the vicar of St Mary with St Alban, the Rev. David Cloake who led the prayers and Remembrance Day hymns. He told the crowd that the march from RBL had passed two homeless men, who had both served in the Armed Forces.
The famous tribute poem “In Flanders Field’ was also read.
This The trumpet playing of The Last Post was followed by the traditional two minute silence at 11am and the sounding of Reveille.
The 1000-strong gathering then joined in the reciting of the words most associated with Remembrance Day.
“When you go home, tell them of us and say
“For your tomorrow we gave our today.”
The service ended with The Blessing and The National Anthem accompanied by the Salvation Army band.
